British astronaut Major Tim Peake is retiring from the European Space Agency (ESA) to become an ambassador for space activities.

Helping young people

The 50-year-old will now concentrate on helping young people pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

He has been an ESA astronaut since May 2009, and was the first British ESA astronaut to visit the International Space Station, launching on a Soyuz rocket on 15 December 2015 with crewmates Tim Kopra and Yuri Malenchenko.
