Farnborough Airport has hit a milestone in the move to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), selling its millionth litre of the green fuel.

The airport is one of the biggest suppliers of SAF to the business aviation industry in the UK. It was also the world’s first airport to offer SAF at the same price as standard Jet A1.

Simon Geere, CEO of the airport, commented, “At Farnborough Airport, we want to be a genuine catalyst for change and are always looking for new ways to supply and create sustainable energy sources. We are proud of this milestone and our vision is to become a SAF only airport before the end of the decade, acting as an early adopter ‘of scale’ and accelerating the wider take-up of SAF across the aviation industry.”

The SAF, which is provided by World Fuel Services, is just one of many sustainable initiatives at the airport. In 2018, it became the world’s first business aviation airport to achieve carbon neutral status. It was awarded Level 4+, the highest level of carbon accreditation, by the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) scheme earlier this year.

The airport also announced plans to build one of the largest solar installations in the southeast of the UK, with the roof-mounted panels helping to generate 25% of the airport’s power. The project it part of Farnborough Airport’s Roadmap to Net Zero, where it has committed to be Net Zero for emissions within its direct control by 2030 or sooner.
