Last week, Safran unveiled Aneto – its new range of engines for the super-medium and heavy helicopter market. The Aneto-1K model of the engine has been selected by Leonardo to power its twin-engine AW189K. Entry into service is scheduled for Q4, 2018.

We talked to Florent Chauvancy, VP, Heavy Helicopter Engines Programme, Safran, to find out more about the technology and its benefits.

“This is not only a new engine; it’s a complete family – going from 2,500 shaft horsepower to 3,000 shaft horsepower. It’s a whole set of engines for the super-medium and heavy helicopter market.”

He added: “This engine family is very compact; it’s ‘power-concentrated’ – we have a very good power to weight ratio and this can either bring power growth or, on the other hand, the fuel consumption is very good as well. Those technology ‘gold bricks’ will enable us to improve it even further and to save up to 15% on the fuel burn, depending on the model.”
