Look out business aviation, there’s a disruptor in town. At Singapore Airshow last week, UK start-up Samad Aerospace unveiled its plans to develop the Starling Jet, the world’s first business aircraft with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL).

The 10-seat Starling Jet will be a three-engine, hybrid-electric craft.

We caught up with Samad Aerospace’s CEO, Seyed Mohseni, to find out more.

He told us: “We have designed the Starling Jet to fly without the need for airports. It has vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), helicopter capabilities but with the speed and range of a business jet.”

The Starling Jet will be able to reach speeds of 460 mph with a range of 1,500 miles.

Business jet meets helicopter

Mohseni’s vision is to merge business jets and helicopters. The plan is also to move towards autonomous flight.

Mohseni only showed a model in Singapore but claims the company will fly a full-scale, technical demonstrator by March 2018 and is working “around the clock” to accelerate certification.

So, when can we buy one?

“2022 for the eStarling fully electric and 2024 for the longer range Starling Jet.”
